John Loder passed away from a sudden heart attack on January 19th, 2013. Coincidentally, John happened to be skiing on Mammoth Mountain when he had his heart attack, and he literally passed away on the mountain while he was doing an activity that he truly loved - skiing. As a tribute to our late great friend, the John Loder Silver Bullet Bomb Run was created and conceived to be an annual ski event to celebrate his life, while having fun at the same time, something that John certainly would have wanted.
Why Silver Bullet Bomb Run?
The Silver Bullet was John's nickname for his trusty steed - his Silver Audi A4. John loved that car almost as much as he loved skiing itself. But what he really loved was letting everyone know that his car was all tuned up and ready to head up to Mammoth. Bombing a ski run means going all the way down the hill without stopping, usually without carving or turning. No ski day with Loder was complete without hearing him yell out "Bomb Run!" And although we usually threw in a bunch of carves and turns (hey - we're not crazy) we always finished up our top to bottom run ready for Apres Ski. That said, it was only fitting to name this annual event the John Loder Silver Bullet Bomb Run.
